First off, thanks to TuneSociety for getting these forums going! You guys are doing a wonderful job of keeping us updated and "in the loop." Keep up the great work!
As we all know, mastering can make the difference between a mediocre (or poor) recording and an outstanding one. For those of us who don't have 10K to spend on the latest and greatest mastering suite from company X, what are artists using that they would recommend? Also, what mastering guides are out there that people have found helpful--online or otherwise?
Just curious.
Thanks!
Tom Gannaway

hi Tom, there is an amazing plug-in called Ozone made by a company called iZotope, here's the link: http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/ozone/ this is an amazing mastering plug-in that has really leveled the mastering playing field. it has professional, genre specific presets that usually hit the sound right on the money, or at least give you a really close starting point to tweak from. with this plug-in you can truly master you won music with fantastic results. i use it, it rocks. (and im not sponsored by iZotope:) i hope this helps! peace, Luke. www.lukeatencio.com

I use Logic Pro, I am pretty sure the latest version Logic Pro 9 is $500, not cheap, but not a $10k production suite, but you get alot of powerful software for $500. It has quite a few preset master tracks, (hip-hop, rock, voice, etc.) as well as plenty of plugins to customize your own sound.

also works great if you have a midi keyboard!

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the info! Actually, I sprung for Logic Pro a couple of weeks ago and am loving it! I copied over some of the mastering tools presets from the demo project that comes with Logic and voila!, the results were amazing.
Where are the voice, hip hop, etc. master presets found?
Regards, Tom

There is a great book 'Mastering Audio-the art and the science' by Bob Katz.
Pretty heavy going at times but really useful. I endorse izotope Ozone 4. A great mastering plugin, but be careful how you use it. it is as easy to screw things up as make them sound better ;)

I like sonnox limiter but more recently i really like the waves L316 - I have heard a lot of mutterings and annoyance from proffessional masterers about the L316 and that it threatens what they do for a living. I really like it. Till next year and there will be a whole bunch of new ones.
